Please see Wikia:Licensing for details of the licensing on this wiki.
Warning! Information below may be outdated or incorrect.

This wiki uses the GNU Free Documentation License. Whenever you edit or add to this wiki, you release your contributions under that license. This is explained on every edit screen.

We have added some other content to this wiki:

  • some Hugo/O'Donnell spoilers, because we think their license is compatible with the GNU FDL
  • some parts of Rodney, when contributors gave permission to us
  • other spoilers whose authors have given us permission
  • NetHack source code and screenshots

Default copyright[]

All contributions to this wiki are released under the GNU Free Documentation License. See Wikia copyrights for details.

Permission is granted to copy, distribute and/or modify this document under the terms of the GNU Free Documentation License, Version 1.2 or any later version published by the Free Software Foundation; with no Invariant Sections, no Front-Cover Texts, and no Back-Cover Texts. A copy of the license is included in the section entitled "Text of the GNU Free Documentation License".

Images[]

For copyright of an image, see the page for that image. Screenshots of NetHack are likely to be labelled as NGPL, while other images might count as fair use.

Copyright-orphan spoilers[]

There are many spoilers available which carry no copyright notice, but the copyright of these still lies with their authors. It might be said that the voluntary public distribution of these documents is an implied license which grants the freedoms necessary for us to include these works in this wiki. We do so in good faith by using the {{basedon}} template, which looks like this:

This page is based on a spoiler by Matthew Lahut, available at http://www.steelypips.org/nethack/pray.html

If you are a spoiler author whose work has been used in this manner against your intentions, contact us and we will remove the offending text.

If the spoiler does carry a copyright statement (which is not inclusion-compatible with the GNU GFDL), do not use it without obtaining permission from the author.

Non-GNU-GFDL content[]

The Hugo Spoilers[]

The spoilers created by Kevin Hugo and Dylan O'Donnell are licensed under a BSD-ish license, which Dylan believes is compatible with this website. The template Template:DOD should be used on any page which is based on one of the xxxx-343.txt spoilers.

This page is based on a spoiler by Dylan O'Donnell. The original license is:

Redistribution, copying, and editing of these spoilers, with or without modification, are permitted provided that the following conditions are met:

  1. The original contributors to any spoiler must continue to be credited.
  2. Any modifications to the spoiler must be acknowledged and credited.

Rodney[]

A few contributors to Rodney agreed to rerelease their contributions to this wiki under the GNU Free Documentation License. A full list is at Wikihack:Contributors to Rodney donating to the Wiki.

You will see this message on pages that have Rodney content:

Some or all of the information on this page was taken from http://alt.org/nethack/rodney-learn.php with the permission of the contributor. A list of people who gave such permission is at Contributors to Rodney donating to the Wiki.

NetHack Copyright[]

This wiki contains screen shots, source code, and quotes from the NetHack game itself.

The following copyright applies to NetHack:

NetHack, Copyright 1985-2003
By Stichting Mathematisch Centrum and M. Stephenson.
See license for details.

The license for NetHack is the NetHack General Public License.

Sometimes, you will see this message on source code and screenshot pages:

The NetHack General Public License applies to screenshots, source code and other content from NetHack.

Note that unlike the other licenses above, the NetHack General Public License is not compatible with the GNU Free Documentation License. So you cannot add your own contributions to this wiki under the NetHack license, unless you also multilicense under the GNU FDL.

Older versions of Hack and NetHack carry what we call the CWI license, and carry the following message:

Screenshots and source code from Hack are used under the CWI license.
